Amazon Spends BIG on Lord of the Rings

Ever since Game of Thrones, streaming services have been looking for their own hit fantasy series. Netflix has had some mixed results, but now Amazon is hoping to crush the competition. They have picked up what is perhaps the mother of all fantasy properties: Lord of the Rings.

The series is in production right now with a planned debut on Amazon Prime Video later this year. This is set the become perhaps the most expensive show ever made at $465 million for the first season alone! Like Peter Jackson's famed film adaptation, it will be shot in New Zealand. Amazon is set to receive significant tax rebates from the NZ government.

Netflix Competitors Now Take Up Half of the Market

Netflix competitors now make up half of the demand for all streaming shows, according to Parrot Analytics. As more and more streaming services like Disney Plus, Apple TV Plus, and HBO Max have cropped up, Netflix has seen increasing competition and fewer subscribers overall.

We will soon find out how much this has affected their bottom line. The company reports earnings on Tuesday.
