In yet another sign that the streaming wars are, in fact, taking over Hollywood, streaming services like AppleTV+ and Netflix dominated last night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards. On top of that, all but one SAG Award-winning TV show and movie are currently available (or soon will be) to stream on major platforms.

CODA Shakes Up Awards Season

The biggest awards of the night went to the AppleTV+ comedy-drama CODA for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, HBO’s Succession for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, and AppleTV+’s Ted Lasso for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

CODA’s Troy Kotsur made history last night as well, becoming the first deaf actor to win an individual award at the SAG ceremony (Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role). CODA, directed by Sian Heder, tells the story of a CODA (or “child of deaf adult”) who serves as the interpreter for members of her Boston family. It received critical acclaim when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival before being acquired by Apple for a record-setting $25 million.

Apple’s streaming service picked up yet another accolade for Jason Sudeikis with the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series.

Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Max Make a Splash

Meanwhile the Netflix hit Squid Game picked up Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series (Lee Jung-jae), Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series, (Jung Ho-yeon), and Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series.

Michael Keaton gave an emotional acceptance speech where he spoke about the death of a loved one to addiction while picking up his award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series for Hulu’s Dopesick

As for HBO Max and HBO, Hacks and Mare of Easttown both won awards courtesy of Jean Smart and Kate Winslet, respectively. Hacks became the first Max Original to win a SAG award.

The entire ceremony can be streamed later today on HBO Max. View the full list of winners and nominees here.
